The city gets roughly 320 to 330 sunny days a year and about 6 mm of rain, and the sea stays swimmable all year, from around 22°C in February to 29°C in August. October is the single best month and spring is the sweet spot for most visitors: warm water, bearable air, and smaller crowds than the summer peak. Winter is mild and quiet, summer is genuinely hot, and autumn is the season experienced divers and repeat visitors tend to pick.

Over 300 sunny days a year, warm water year-round, and a genuine 12-month tourism season. But every month in Hurghada feels different — here's what you actually need to know.

Hurghada's great advantage as a destination is its climate. The city receives approximately 320–330 sunny days per year, virtually no rainfall — the annual total is around 6mm — and Red Sea water temperatures that stay swimmable every single month of the year. In the coldest month, February, the sea is still around 22°C. In August, it reaches 29°C.

But "swimmable year-round" doesn't mean every month is equal. Air temperatures swing from pleasant 23°C winter days to taxing 38–40°C summer afternoons. Wind patterns change by season and affect diving visibility and boat trips. Crowds and prices peak at different times for different nationalities. Winter in Hurghada is mild and dry. Daytime temperatures typically sit between 20–26°C — warm enough for the beach by day but requiring a light layer for evenings and boat trips. December is lively, pulling in European winter-sun seekers and Gulf families for Eid and Christmas breaks. January and February are significantly quieter and more affordable, making them excellent months for solo travellers, budget-conscious visitors, and anyone who prefers the beach without the crowds.

What winter is best for

Desert tours and cultural day trips are particularly pleasant in winter — the cooler air makes quad biking and Bedouin safari excursions comfortable in a way they are not in summer. Diving conditions are solid, with good underwater visibility. The sea at 22–24°C is swimmable for most people, though wetsuits are recommended for longer dives.

February can bring periodic wind and choppier seas. If boat trips or snorkelling are a priority, build flexibility into your itinerary and check conditions locally before booking. The Dolphin House excursion and Orange Bay trips are best on calm days.

Spring is widely considered the best season in Hurghada, and April in particular is consistently cited as the top month across traveller reviews. Temperatures are warm but not extreme — typically 26–30°C by day, with mild evenings around 18–20°C. The sea is clear and warm enough for comfortable extended swimming and snorkelling. Winds are generally calm, creating ideal conditions for boat trips, island excursions, and underwater photography.

April — Hurghada's finest month

April delivers what many consider the Red Sea at its absolute best. The coral reefs are vivid and clearly visible, the light is strong without being punishing, the water temperature is rising but not yet hot, and the overall tourist density — while elevated — feels balanced rather than overwhelming. It is the month when Hurghada's full range of experiences is most accessible and most enjoyable simultaneously.

May — the water sports specialist's month

May sees temperatures climb toward 32–34°C, which puts some visitors off. But for kiteboarding, windsurfing, and paddleboarding enthusiasts, May's warm temperatures and reliable winds create ideal conditions. The slight drop in tourist numbers from April's peak also means more space on the water and better availability on accommodation.

Spring highlight

Spring is one of the prime diving seasons on the Red Sea. Underwater visibility is excellent, and a wide variety of marine life — including turtles, dolphins, and pelagic fish species — is active around the offshore reefs. The Dolphin House and Abu Nuhas wreck sites are at their best from March through May.

Summer in Hurghada is hot. We won't soften that. Daytime temperatures in July and August regularly reach 38–40°C, and midday sun is genuinely intense. However, this is a desert heat — dry, with low humidity — which most people find more bearable than the humid heat of a tropical destination. The Red Sea itself is warmest in summer, hitting 29°C in August and making the water feel almost bath-like for extended swimming sessions.

Who summer suits well

Egyptian families, Gulf visitors, and Russian and Eastern European travellers make up the dominant summer crowd. For domestic Egyptian visitors from Cairo and the Delta, Hurghada's Red Sea air feels cool and restorative compared to the inland heat. Families with children who are happy in the pool and at the beach all day thrive in summer — the sea is warm, the evenings are long and pleasant, and July and August represent Hurghada at its most energetic and social.

Summer also offers the best accommodation prices of the year for European visitors, as most Europeans avoid the heat. If you are budget-sensitive and heat-tolerant, this is when Hurghada represents exceptional value.

Summer strategy

Adapt your schedule to the sun: water activities and excursions before noon, a long lunch and rest in air-conditioned comfort from 12–4pm, then the beach and promenade come alive again in the late afternoon. Evening Hurghada — from 6pm onward — is genuinely beautiful in summer: warm, lit, and busy in the best way.

The summer heat has broken by October, but the sea retains all the warmth it accumulated over summer — typically 26–29°C through November. The result is a golden window: beach days are genuinely comfortable, evenings are warm and pleasant, and underwater conditions are exceptional.

October — the single best month

October deserves its top ranking. Daytime temperatures settle around 27–30°C — ideal beach and outdoor weather with no discomfort. The sea is at 28°C and crystal clear. Light breezes are consistent without being disruptive. Diving visibility at the offshore reefs peaks in autumn. Tourist density is elevated — October is well-known — but the calibre of travellers it attracts tends to be higher, meaning the experience feels lively but not overcrowded.

November — underrated and excellent

November is the quiet version of October. Temperatures ease slightly, the crowds thin, and prices come back down from peak. The sea remains warm and swimmable through the entire month. Autumn is widely considered the finest season for diving on the Red Sea.
