Hurghada International Airport (HRG) is Egypt's second largest airport — and one of the most connected resort airports in the region. It handles direct flights from over 80 destinations worldwide, including the key Gulf hubs and a dense domestic connection with Cairo. Whether you're flying in from Cairo for a long weekend, travelling from Riyadh for an Eid break, or routing through from Dubai, this guide gives you the complete picture: realistic flight options, typical prices, journey times, and what to do once you land.

Flying — the default and best choice

The Cairo–Hurghada route is one of the most heavily served domestic routes in Egypt. Four airlines operate direct non-stop flights: EgyptAir, Air Cairo, Nile Air, and Nesma Airlines. With approximately 80+ weekly departures, departure times span across the full day from early morning to late evening, meaning you can almost always find a flight that fits your schedule without committing far in advance.

Flight time is consistently around one hour — among the shortest domestic hops in the region. One-way fares on budget days start from around $30 on Nile Air and Air Cairo, with EgyptAir typically pricing between $40–$80 depending on timing and demand. EgyptAir is the most popular carrier on the route by passenger volume and has the strongest on-time track record.

Airline Type Typical one-way fare Frequency
EgyptAir Full-service $40–$80 Daily, multiple departures
Air Cairo Budget/charter $30–$65 Daily
Nile Air Budget $30–$55 Daily
Nesma Airlines Budget $30–$60 Several per week

Booking tip

Booking 6 weeks ahead typically saves around 15% compared to last-minute fares. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays generally offer the lowest fares on this route. For Eid and holiday periods, book at least 4–6 weeks in advance as flights fill quickly.

By road — the scenic alternative

Cairo to Hurghada by car or bus takes approximately 5–6 hours on a well-maintained desert highway. The road is straightforward and safe for private vehicles. Several intercity coach operators run the route, with comfortable air-conditioned coaches departing from Cairo's central bus terminals. Road travel is a popular choice for Cairene families travelling with luggage, and can be economical for groups.

Private taxi transfers are available, typically priced at $60–$100 per vehicle — making them competitive for 3–4 passengers versus airline fares, and offering door-to-door convenience without airport check-in time.

Route 02

Riyadh → Hurghada

A direct option exists — with connections as the popular alternative

Direct flight time

~2h 25min

Direct airline

Flynas

From

~$110 one-way

Via Cairo option

Yes — EgyptAir, Air Cairo

Direct option: Flynas

Flynas operates the only scheduled non-stop service between Riyadh (RUH) and Hurghada (HRG), with a flight time of approximately 2 hours 25 minutes. The flight number is XY349, departing from Terminal 1 at King Khalid International Airport. Flynas is a Saudi low-cost carrier with a solid operational record and is one of the most popular choices among Saudi travellers to Egypt.

Fares from Riyadh to Hurghada on Flynas start from around $110 one-way for budget dates, with round-trip fares typically ranging between $280–$580 depending on season and advance booking. The cheapest months to fly are typically October and April; fares peak in July and August during school summer holidays.

Connecting via Cairo — the flexible alternative

Several airlines offer connections via Cairo International Airport (CAI), which is a natural hub for Egypt-bound travel from the Gulf. EgyptAir, Air Cairo, and Nesma Airlines all serve the Riyadh–Cairo route, from which the one-hour domestic hop to Hurghada can be added on the same ticket or separately. Total journey time via Cairo is typically 4–5 hours including connection time.

Connecting via Cairo can sometimes produce better fares than the direct Flynas route, particularly when booking through aggregators. It also gives travellers the option to overnight in Cairo and visit the Pyramids, Grand Egyptian Museum, or other sites before continuing to Hurghada — a popular combination itinerary for Gulf visitors.

Option Airline(s) Duration Typical fare (OW)
Direct Flynas (XY349) ~2h 25min $110–$200
Via Cairo EgyptAir, Air Cairo 4–5h total $130–$250
Via Istanbul Turkish Airlines, Pegasus 7–9h total $120–$200

Saudi traveller tip

Egyptian nationals living in Saudi Arabia are among the most frequent users of this route. Around the major Egyptian public holidays — particularly April and October — flights can book out weeks in advance. Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr periods also see a significant surge; if your dates coincide, book at least 6 weeks ahead and expect slightly elevated pricing.

The routing options

There is currently no scheduled non-stop service from Dubai (DXB) to Hurghada (HRG). Travellers from Dubai have two efficient connection options: via Cairo or via Riyadh.

Via Cairo (EgyptAir): The most popular routing. EgyptAir operates 4 flights per day from Dubai to Cairo, from which the 1-hour domestic connection to Hurghada can be caught on the same ticket. The fastest itineraries via Cairo complete the journey in around 6.5–8 hours total, depending on connection time at Cairo International.

Via Riyadh (Flynas): Flynas connects Dubai to Riyadh, from which its direct Riyadh–Hurghada service (XY349) can be caught. This routing can achieve a total journey time of approximately 6h 50min on the fastest itineraries.

Route option Airline(s) Min. total duration Typical fare (OW)
Dubai → Cairo → Hurghada EgyptAir ~6h 30min $230–$350
Dubai → Riyadh → Hurghada Flynas ~6h 50min $200–$330
Dubai → Istanbul → Hurghada Turkish Airlines, Pegasus 9–11h $180–$280

UAE traveller note

Travellers from Abu Dhabi and Sharjah have similar options — Abu Dhabi International and Sharjah International both connect to Cairo via EgyptAir and Air Arabia respectively. Sharjah to Cairo (Air Arabia) is a popular budget option with competitive fares for the onward domestic connection to Hurghada.

Considering Egypt as a longer trip?

Dubai–Hurghada travellers with flexible schedules often build a combined Egypt itinerary: fly into Cairo, spend 2–3 days visiting the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, then take the 1-hour domestic flight to Hurghada for a beach segment. This "culture + coast" combination has become one of the most popular Egypt travel itineraries among UAE-based visitors.

Hurghada International Airport (HRG)

Egypt's second-largest airport — modern, manageable, and well-connected

Hurghada International Airport handles over 4 million passengers annually and is among the top-10 busiest airports in Africa. It serves 80+ international destinations and receives regular charter traffic from across Europe, Russia, and the Gulf. The airport is approximately 8 km from central Hurghada, making it one of the most conveniently located resort airports in the region — transfer times to most hotels and residential areas run 15–30 minutes.

What to expect at arrivals

For most international arrivals, the process is straightforward. Egyptian citizens and holders of Gulf national IDs can enter without a visa. Most other nationalities purchase a visa on arrival ($25 USD, also available as an e-visa before travel). Arrivals is modern and efficient — for resort charter flights, baggage claim to taxi rank typically takes 30–45 minutes. The airport has ATMs and currency exchange desks in the arrivals hall.

Practical note

Hurghada Airport charges a small departure tax, which is included in most modern ticket prices but worth checking. For very early or late arrivals, it's worth pre-booking your airport transfer — taxis can be in short supply during overnight peak periods, particularly at the height of European charter season (October–April).

Typically $6–$15

Distance guide

Central Hurghada / Al Mamsha: 15–20 min · Sahl Hasheesh: 25–35 min · El Gouna: 25–35 min · Soma Bay: 45–55 min. All are reasonable distances that make Hurghada Airport one of the most accessible resort airports on the Red Sea.
